Color photo of a replica of a Tenth Legion statue in the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.

This statue shows that there was a presence of the Tenth Legion in Jerusalem during the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. The was a legion stamp discovered which is a tile bearing the stamp of the tenth legion (Legio X Fretensis which means “Tenth Legion of the Sea Strait”). It is forever a reminder that Jerusalem was completely destroyed by the Romans in 70 A.D. The Jewish Wars began in 66 A.D. Titus with his tenth legion arrived at the outermost northern Wall of Jerusalem during the Passover of 70 A.D. After five months the Temple was burned down, and the city was left buried, except for Herod’s three great towers at the northwest corner of the city to serve as a memorial of the massive strength of Jerusalem’s fortifications which Titus of Rome had brought to rubble. The tenth legion remained at the west entrance to Jerusalem for 200 years.

“Caesar ordered the whole city and the Temple to be razed to the ground, leaving only the loftiest towers, Phasael, Hippicus, and Mariamne, and the portion of the wall enclosing the city on the west; the latter as an encampment of the garrison that was to remain.” – Josephus, “Jewish War,” VII 1,1
