2020 Color photo of a Royal Window Balustrade from Time of the Kings excavated in the ruins of a royal Judaean palace at Ramat Rahl between Jerusalem and Bethlehem.

Little has survived from the period of the kings of Israel and Judah. Certain sites reveal some of the architectural ornamentation that existed at the time. This window balustrade reveals certain masonry styles which are seen in the palace of Samaria, the capital of the northern kingdom of Israel during the time of the Kings.

The Phoenician style reflects what the Bible says about the Phoenician king Hiram of Tyre and his assistance in building David’s Palace and the Temple of Solomon.

Hiram Builds a Palace for David
2 Samuel 5:11 – “And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and carpenters, and masons: and they built David an house.”

Hiram Assists Solomon
1 Kings 5:18 – “And Solomon’s builders and Hiram’s builders did hew them, and the stonesquarers: so they prepared timber and stones to build the house.”
