Color photo of a Roman Milestone with an inscription carved by the soldiers of the Tenth Legion. The Latin inscription mentions both the Roman Emperor Vespasian  and his son Titus, commander of the Roman army who destroyed and buried Jerusalem in 70 AD.

This milestone was discovered near the Temple Mount in Jerusalem and is now located in the Israel Museum.

The inscription reads:

VESPASIAN(US)
AUGUSTUS IMPERATOR T(ITUS CAE)
SAR VESP(ASIANUS) AUG(USTUS) (f(ilius)
L(UCIUS FLAVIUS SILVA)
AUG(USTI) PR PR (PRO-PRAETOR)
LEG(IO) X FR(ATENSIS)

The translation is:

Emperor Caesar Vespasian Augustus,
Emperor Titus Caesar Vespasian
Augustus, his son: Lucius Flavius
Silva, Propraetor of Augustus,
the Tenth Legion Fretensis.
